Synopsis
In his email, President Hurley highlights 3 key points:
1) We are facing a number of challenges as an institution with regard
to student recruitment and the “economic realities of today”
2) A lack of true distinctiveness in the academic marketplace
contributes to the problem
3) To achieve greater distinctiveness and ensure stability, we must
focus on the reallocation of resources to fund new programs or
strengthen others
He also adds that UMW’s sources of new revenue (additional students, tuition increases, and state support) will be “very limited going forward”.
Hurley’s email reveals that UMW has “embarked on a review” to work with an external consulting group from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) to address the non-academic side of the institution.
As for the academic side, Hurley strongly feels that UMW Faculty would benefit from being guided by the experience and skills of Interim Provost, Ian Newbould: “I would emphasize that this individual will help to 'guide' the process with the full involvement of the faculty” (Hurley, Email to UMW Faculty and Staff).
Hurley states that the review is necessary “to identify opportunities for savings that can be redirected to higher priorities—so that we may achieve distinction and attract the best students.”
